Hyderabad, April 12: Complaints are still pouring in of foul-smelling, yellow coloured drinking water being supplied to residents of various localities in the Old City. This is despite the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board claiming that measures have been taken to ensure that the water is potable. Most areas in the Old City get water from the Himayatsagar reservoir and a few localities from Osmansagar.
The government has already constituted an expert committee to study the “colour and odour” problem of water in the two reservoirs.
The continuing protests from local residents has prompted the Board to reduce the water intake from Himayatsagar from 15 MGD per day to 11 MGD daily as a precautionary measure, and divert an additional 14 MGD of Krishna water to meet the 25 MGD requirement of Division-I areas covering most parts of the Old City.
On Sunday, when complaints of foul smelling coloured water were reported from various localities in the Old City that get their water supply from Himayatsagar through the Mir Alam filter bed, HMWS&SB managing director, Mr M Jagadeeshwar, visited the filter bed. The MIM corporator Mr Mohd Mubin and some local residents stormed the filter bed and complained to the MD about the water supplied to them. Mr Mubin said many children have been suffering from loose motions for the past three months.
