‘Church of England under pressure to accept gay marriage’

London, July 12: Two senior bishops have warned that the Church of England is under growing pressure to accept gay marriage, an issue likely to split the communion.

Bishop of Guildford Dr Christopher Hill and Bishop of Chichester Dr John Hinds said the Church is not prepared to abandon its traditional teachings in favour of the idea of “gender neutral” marriage.

They underlined that the Church of England believes “it is vital for the Church to maintain a critical distance from the state and to resist what the state is doing if this is at odds with Scripture,” the Daily Mail reported today.

The Church has made it clear that it will resist pressure from the ruling Labour-led government here to introduce any form of same sex marriage, the report said.
