Cher supportive of daughter’s sex-change decision

Los Angeles, June 19: Pop star Cher, 63, has broken her silence over her daughter’s “difficult journey” to change her sex. In a statement issued late Wednesday to US magazine People, Cher expressed her support on Chastity (Chaz) Bono’s decision to become a man.

Chastity (Chaz) Bono, who is a lesbian, began undergoing sex change operations shortly after her 40th birthday on March 4. She has been active in the gay and lesbian movement for many years.

“She is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny,” Cher said in the statement.

“Although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child”.

Chastity is the only child of the legendary pop duo Sonny and Cher. The entertainers divorced in 1974 and Bono died in a ski accident in 1998.

In 1998 Cher told People magazine that initially she had a hard time accepting Chastity’s homosexuality.

At first when Chastity was pursuing a career as rock singer she kept her sexual orientation a secret. But in 1990 a weekly tabloid unveiled her lesbianism.
