New Delhi, January 28: A day after five persons were executed in Bangladesh for assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen today said she disfavoured capital punishment for any crime even though she had been “devastated” by former president’s killing.
“I do not believe that hanging of criminals would bring an end to crime anywhere. You ought to eradicate the source of crime. You have to educate the people on democracy and human rights. Death penalty is not a solution to checking crime,” she told PTI in an e-mail while commenting on execution of five ex-army officers convicted for assassinating Mujib in 1975.
“Although I was devastated to hear Mujib’s (Mujibur Rahman) assassination and have always been against terrorism, fanaticism and fundamentalism, I am not in favour of death penalty,” said the ex-physician-turned-feminist author, who is under attack from Muslim fundamentalists for her book ‘Lajja’.
