Kolkata, April 29: The BJP today said it will highlight the poor plight of West Bengal potato farmers in Parliament.
Claiming that distress sale of the vegetable in the state is leading to suicides and depression among the growers, BJP national leader Rajnath Singh said, “We will raise the issue of distress sale of potato in West Bengal in Parliament and would demand fair and remunerative prices for the vegetable.”
This year, there has been a bumper crop of potatoes in West Bengal, the largest grower of the vegetable in the country.
However, the farmers are incurring huge losses because of abysmally low field price of potato. Due to non-availability of storage facilities, they are forced to sell the vegetable for as low as Re one per kg, which is much less than their input costs, Singh told reporters here.
