Hyderabad, October 15: The national BJP leader, Mr M Venkaiah Naidu, has demanded that the UPA government at the Centre to bring about changes in the 52nd Constitution Amendment to sharpen the anti-defection law. This constructive measure would not only ensure political stability but also help the popular governments in completing their full term, he opined.
Mr Naidu was addressing a media conference at the State party office along with the State party president, Mr G Kishen Reddy, the national BJP leaders, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, Dr K Lakshman and Mr N Indrasena Reddy.
Expressing happiness over the survival of the Karnataka government in the trial of strength on the floor of the Assembly twice, Mr Naidu said that though some power-mongers, in connivance with mining mafia,
conspired to topple the legally elected government by luring the MLAs with money, the Chief Minister Yeddyurappa emerged victorious. He described the result as the victory of the people of Karnataka.
Describing the Governor, Mr Bhardwaj’s style of functioning as retrograde and a blot on democracy, the BJP leader said that the former had converted Raj Bhavan into a Congress party office by unashamedly claiming himself as a hardcore Congressman.
The Governor’s complicity in trying to topple the legally elected BJP government clearly proved that Congress-led UPA government at the Centre was behind the “toppling game”.
Alleging that the Congress party has the habit of toppling non-Congress governments from the beginning, Mr Venkai ah said that in 1989, the Congress party “backstabbed” the then NTR government with the help of then Governor Ramlal.
Stating that the Union Home Minister’s assertion that the Centre had no role in the Karnataka crisis as ridiculous, Mr Venkaiah questioned the role of the Governor in recommending President’s rule on one hand and advising the Chief Minister to seek confidence on the floor of the House for second time.
As the Congress leaders themselves have admitted that the Governor had erred, the Congress government at the Centre should realize its folly and recall the Governor immediately,
he demanded. (NSS)
