Bihar floods: toll reaches 52, 1.5 million affected

Patna, August 29: The toll in the current spell of floods in Bihar today mounted to 52 with 23 more people perishing as around 1.5 million people remained hit in 11 districts.

Officials said the fresh deaths were reported from Purnia (12), Sitamarhi (4), Saharsa (3) and Madhubani and Darbhanga (two each).

Relief and rescue operations were intensified with the help of four National Disaster Response Force teams equipped with 1000 boats, they said.

Major rivers like Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, the Adhwara group of rivers and Kosi were still in spate, Central Water Commission said.

While Burhi Gandak was flowing 4 cm above the danger level at Rosera, Bagmati was flowing 41 cm and 94 cm above the danger mark at Benibad and Hayaghat respectively.
