Bank employees stage dharna before RBI’s regional office

Thiruvananthapuram: Bank officers and employees today staged a dharna before the RBI’s regional office here and submitted a memorandum demanding adequate availability of Rs 500, Rs 100 and Rs 50 notes in all bank branches in view of the severe shortage of banknotes post demonetisation.

Representatives of the All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) and All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) also met the RBI’s Regional Director here in the morning and handed over a memorandum stating, among other things, that discrimination against district cooperative banks should be stopped.

The associations said that due to currency shortage, customers were being forced to stand in long queues for receiving payment and are taking out their anger on the bank staff.

While RBI is repeatedly making public statements that adequate currency was being supplied to the banks, the reality was otherwise, they said.

“These statements are making the public to feel that RBI is supplying cash to the banks but bank staff are deliberately not extending payments,” they said.

They also demanded that all ATMs be enabled to function with all denomination notes, M D Gopinath, General Secretary, AIBOA Kerala, and C D Josson, General Secretary, AIBEA, said.
