Amritsar, May 21: Invoking the spirit of Indian Constitution, a local NGO has asked for the intervention of the Prime Minister to revoke the ban on wearing of kirpan (little sword) by the Sikh employees of Sri Guru Ramdas International (Rajasansi) Airport here.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, chief of the NGO Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM), Charanjit Singh Gumtala has said that article 25 (2) (b) of the Indian Constitution, gives right to Sikhs to wear a kirpan at all times.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) had banned Sikh employees from wearing kirpans while performing duties at Sri Guru Ram Das International Airport last week.
Even the ministry of civil aviation’s circular in 1999 allows Sikh passengers to carry kirpan with them on board domestic flights, Gumtala said.
