New Delhi, November 02: Hailing the Allahabad High Court verdict in the Ayodhya title suits, a Muslim forum said that any amicable settlement should not let those responsible for the Babri Masjid demolition go scot-free.
Describing the verdict as “a practical and humane approach, respecting all views,” the forum We the citizens of Lucknow appealed for peace in a statement issued here.
“A large section of people, both the Hindus and the Muslims, feel that the judgement is one which could best be given in the current scenario,” the forum said.
However, any settlement between the contesting parties should not let off those responsible for the demolition of the 16th century structure. “The culprits should be brought to book at the earliest,” it said.
The members made it clear that they did not align themselves with critics of the verdict who found it “unscientific, illogical and against history” and said most Hindus and Muslims had moved on and there were more pressing issues like illiteracy and poverty that needed attention.
They also urged all parties to show “magnanimity and flexibility” and said the issue must be closed for good.
