Australian sex workers march for their rights

Sydney, June 05: Sydney – Australian sex workers took to the street Saturday to demand equality under the law and to mark International Whores Day.

The prostitutes’ trade union Scarlet Alliance demonstrated at Sydney’s Opera House, where the red-clad protestors demanded equal civil rights for sex workers.

“Currently levels of discrimination against sex workers are unacceptably high,” union leader Janelle Fawkes said.

“From prices to advertise in newspapers, through to getting bank loans and being affected in custody battles because of our sex-work experience being used against us.”

Scarlet Alliance claims prostitutes pay 10 times what other service providers are charged for newspaper advertisements.
