Melbourne, January 16: Somdev Devvarman’s Australian Open debut will have to extend one more year after he was defeated in the final qualifying round of the year’s first grand slam by Slovenian Blaz Kavcic at Melbourne.
27th seed Somdev lost in straight sets 3-6,6-7 (4) to the 12th seed Kavcic to end India’s interest in the men’s singles competition.
Earlier Yuki Bhambri and Peakash Amritraj crashed out in the first and second round of the qualifiers.
Sania Mirza will be the only Indian representative in the singles event where she is scheduled to meet 26th seed Frenchwomen Aravane Rezai.
