London, July 15:A German court has reportedly sentenced a 94-year-old former guard at the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz to four years in jail for acting as an accessory to the murder of at least 300,000 Jews.
Oskar Groening, known as the ‘bookkeeper of Auschwitz’, counted the belongings confiscated from prisoners and had admitted ‘moral guilt,’ reported the BBC.
His lawyers although argued that he did not facilitate genocide but prosecutors said that he played a role in running the camp smoothly.
Groening is expected to be one of the last Nazis to face trial.
Many observers have questioned if he would be sent to jail, given his advanced age.
The trial took place in the northern German city of Lueneburg.
Unlike former Nazis brought to trial, Groening had discussed his role at Auschwitz publically in order to silence those who denied the Holocaust took place.
He had told the BBC in a 2005 documentary, named ‘ Auschwitz: the Nazis and the Final Solution’, “I saw the gas chambers. I saw the crematoria. I was on the ramp when the selections took place.” (ANI)
