Asin is after all, a Mallu girl at heart

Getting an award is always special but receiving one from one’s own community and hometown adds an extra dimension to the experience.

Though Asin Thottumkal is tied up with the promotions of her upcoming film and travelling, she took time off recently to make a trip to Thiruvananthapuram where she was honoured by the government of Kerala.

The actress was awarded for her achievements and success in the field of entertainment by her home state — which makes it even more extra special for her.

The annual award is presented to women who are true icons for young women in Kerala.

Says Asin, “I’m honoured and humbled. It was amazing to receive the award on home soil.” She was conferred the award at a special ceremony which was attended by the state bigwigs. Asin sported the typical white and gold Kerala sari and was accompanied by her parents.

Adds Asin, “Though I have attended several award ceremonies and bagged several honours all these years, this was singularly unique for me. It was special even for my family. Being recognised by people in the place where you come from has special significance.”

Asin was born and grew up in Kochi and her first acting assignment was in a Malayalam film when still a teenager, so she feels this award will occupy pride of place on her mantle piece.

Asin who began doing South films crossed over to Hindi films with Ghajini in 2008. Though she is now part of Bollywood, she featured in a Tamil film Kaavalan last year.

Making it early

Asin makes it a point to visit Kerala for a short vacation at least once in a year. Last year in October, as a birthday gift she had gifted herself a plush new home in Kochi, overlooking the waterfront so that she could watch the sunset and the boats.

Presently, however, due to her commitments, she has not been able to spend time at her pad but plans to visit Kochi at a later date to celebrate the recognition with her family and friends there.
