New Delhi, July 05: Evading a reply on the resignation by 35 Congress MLAS in Andhra Pradesh and 11 party MPs in protest against the delay in formation of Telangana, the Congress just said that an ‘appropriate decision on the issue would be taken at an appropriate time’.
Addressing reporters here yesterday, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, “It (Telangana) is a very sensitive and highly emotional issue. We are aware of the situation. We hope that an appropriate decision will be taken at an appropriate time.” Mr Ahmed, however, refused to elaborate any further.
It is notable that 35 Congress MLAS in Andhra Pradesh and 11 Congress MPs today submitted their resignations demanding a division of Andhra Pradesh and formation of a separate state of Telangana.
The 35 Congress MLAS from Andhra, which include 11 ministers in Congress government in the state, submitted their resignations to the Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Assembly Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.
Eleven Congress MPs – nine from Lok Sabha and two from Rajya Sabha – submitted their resignations to Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari respectively.
When pressed on the issue, Mr Ahmed said the Congress had always said it was not against formation of small states including Telangana.
“However, we hope that an appropriate decision will be taken at an appropriate time,” he reiterated.
On a question if the UPA had been reduced to a minority following resignation of Congress MPs from Telangana region, Mr Ahmed said “not at all. There is no question of the UPA being reduced to a minority”.
