A.P in second for trafficking girls

Hyderabad, March 04: Andhra Pradesh has achieved a distinction of becoming the second State in the country after West Bengal for trafficking girls to other States to be pushed into flesh trade, said renowned anti-trafficking activist Sunitha Krishnan here on Thursday.

Participating in an interactive session organised by the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) to mark the forthcoming International Women’s Day, she said suppliers lure girls in villages on the pretext of providing lucrative opportunities and sell them to brothels in Delhi, Mumbai and Goa.

She said some non-governmental organisations and orphanages along with a few influential people were involved in this racket. Brokers visit remote villages and establish contacts with the community people for purchasing a girl child for paltry sums in the name of adoption and later sell them for Rs.30 lakh, she explained.

Challenge

“The biggest challenge to contain human trafficking is tolerance. This tolerance is enabling perpetrators to commit offences unabatedly. We have to respond to address the problem,” the activist, who co-founded Prajwala, an anti-trafficking organisation, said.

FICCI FLO Chairperson Chandana Chakrabarti said the interactive programme was organised to sensitise members on the conditions of victims of human trafficking which is growing at an unprecedented rate.
