AP announces Rs 618 cr subsidy for calamity-hit farmers

Hyderabad, May 15: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy tonight announced Rs 618 crore input subsidy to farmers whose crops were destroyed due to unseasonal rain in December last year.

The decision came a day before YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy’s hunger strike, seeking compensation for the calamity-hit farmers.

Besides, TDP also announced a day-long seize of all roads in the state on May 19 on the farmers’ issue.

Standing crops were devastated in over 25 lakh acres due to unseasonal rain in December last. The Rabi crop season too ended without the promised relief reaching the affected farmers.

According to a CMO statement, 23.2 lakh farmers would get input subsidy. Of the total, 22.2 lakh are small and marginal farmers in 15 districts.
