Anti-Naxal chiefs in south India to meet city on Jan. 29

Hyderabad, January 27: Chiefs from anti-Naxal agencies in south India will meet in the city on January 29 to discuss ways and methods to combat Maoist strategies.

The purpose of the meet is aimed at sharing intelligence on Maoist networks and to promote inter-state co-operation in conducting anti-Naxal operations.

Top police officials of Intelligence wings in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa are to take part in the meet.

Sources in the state police said information will also be shared on underground cadres and their sympathisers living in other states.

A senior police official of the state police department said all the chiefs will be meeting every three or four months and will be in contact with one another on a regular basis.

“There is a Maoist problem in the Western Ghats area of Karnataka, particularly in Chikmagulur, South Kannada and North Kannada districts, where the movement of three dalams has been spotted. Though in Tamil Nadu there is no underground cadre moving around, there are some natives of Tamil Nadu who are working with underground cadre in other states. Kerala too has similar problems,” said the police official.

As Goa is a tourism destination, cops say that Maoist leaders are using it as a transit point between the North and South. “Goa is a key area due to its location between Karnataka and Maharashtra. Naxals are using it as a transit point and taking shelter there,” said an official.
