Andhra junior doctors call off strike

Hyderabad, November 18: The striking junior doctors in Andhra Pradesh yesterday night called off their agitation, demanding hike in their stipends, after an understanding was reached with the state government.

“We have reached an understanding but I can’t announce the hike as model code is in force for the corporation elections in Hyderabad. The junior doctors are ready to resume their duties immediately,” state medical Education Minister P Sudarshan Reddy told reporters.

“The government has positively responded to our demands.

We will resume our duties immediately,” Raghu Kishore, leader of Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association said.

Maintaining that the stipend paid to them is much lower than the national average, the medicos began an indefinite hunger strike four days ago.

The strike had badly effected medical services across the state.
