A day after an arrest warrant was issued for AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi for an allegedly inflammatory speech at an election rally, party chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday said the party’s legal team will take necessary action in this regard.
“We are trying to get certified copy of the FIR. The legal team of the party will look into this and take necessary legal action,” Asaduddin Owaisi told reporters when asked about the orders of Kishanganj Superintendent of Police Rajiv Ranjan.
Asaduddin Owaisi, the Hyderabad MP, refused to make any further comment, saying the party would act as per the lawyers’ decision.
Akbaruddin Owaisi, who is the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in the Telangana assembly, is the younger brother of Asaduddin Owaisi.
Addressing an election rally at Kishanganj on Sunday, Akbaruddin Owaisi had described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “zalim” (tyrant) and “shaitan” (devil).
Asaduddin said Modi as the then chief minister of Gujarat had failed in his constitutional duty to protect lives. “People will never forget this. They will always remember that the then chief minister failed in his duty,” the MP said.
“As far as this issue (FIR against Akbaruddin) is concerned, our legal team will look into it,” he added.
Asked if he justifies his brother’s remarks or condemns them, the MIM president said now that a FIR has been registered, it doesn’t matter if he comments on it or not.
Asaduddin had said on Monday that while the use of words can be debated, it was a fact that cases relating to Modi’s alleged role in the Gujarat riots were still being heard in courts.
AIMIM is contesting six seats in the Bihar assembly elections.
To a query, Asaduddin said the FIR against Akbaruddin would have no impact on the party’s campaign.
