AIMIM corporator ‘thrashed’ by BJP members sent to jail

AURANGABAD: AIMIM Corporator from Aurangabad who was assaulted for opposing a condolence resolution on Vajpayee’s death has been arrested and sent to one year in detention for alleged bootlegging.

According to Indian Express, the Aurangabad Police on Tuesday took action against Sayyad Mateen Sayyad Rashid (32), under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, and Dangerous Persons Act, 1981 — or MPDA.

Aurangabad Commissioner Chiranjeev Prasad told the leading daily, “Serious offences like arson, rioting, inciting mob for breach of communal harmony, creating alarm in society (invite action)…hence (the police were) left with no choice but to book him under MPDA. Other preventive actions failed to check him.”

During a civic body meeting, BJP corporators led by Rahul Vaidya moved a condolence resolution to pay tribute to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which was opposed by Mateen.

Livid at this, 10-12 BJP corporators, including some women members, pulled Mateen from his seat, pounced on him and slapped, punched and kicked him repeatedly even when he fell on the floor.

The CCTV video of the incident went viral on the social media.

Mateen on August 17 was arrested and booked by City Chowk police station under various IPC sections and sent to Harsul jail in Aurangabad.

He was granted bail on Tuesday, however, the same day, minutes after his release, a team from City Chowk police reached Harsul jail and served another order issued by the city commissioner of Police under the MPDA.

According to the provisions of the MPDA, the AIMIM corporator will remain in detention for a year.
