Tehran, May 01: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of a nuclear non-proliferation conference in New York.
As world countries are to attend the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference on Monday, UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky announced Friday that the two officials will discuss recent developments in a sit-down at the UN headquarters.
“The meeting has been scheduled for Monday, but the hour is yet to be determined,” IRNA news agency quoted Nesirky as saying.
The NPT review conference is held every five years to monitor the global progress in fulfilling disarmament obligations set out in the 40-year old treaty.
According to Dutch Press Agency on Friday, Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak third after the opening remarks by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and a representative from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Iran, which ratified the treaty in 1970, was one of the original 43 signatories to the NPT.
A total of 189 countries are members of the treaty today.
