Athani, August 21: A group of around 30 persons armed with sticks and iron weapons attacked the police who had arrested two people in connection with a dacoity case. The group even fled away with the arrested, here on Thursday.
According to police, Kudachi station sub-inspector Anand Waghamore with constables Chougala, Shamsundar, Arabhavi and Badiger had been to Itnal village in Raibag taluk on Thursday to arrest the suspected of a dacoity case which had occurred a few days ago at Kappalguddi village.
After knowing that the police were taking away two of their members, the gang followed them and blocked the way of the police van.
They then attacked the police and freed the arrested.
The gang took police personnel to a nearby hut and tied them with a rope. Later, the gang damaged all the tyres of the police van.
Though the incident occurred around 1 am, Kudachi police came to know about the incident only at 10 am. After receiving the information, inspector Govindegowda and a few constables rushed to the spot.
However, the gang blocked even this police team in the middle and threw water mixed chilly powder at them and fled from the scene.Chikkodi Dy SP Janawad then rushed to the spot along with a force and arrested 30 persons.
Additional SP Umesh Pangam also visited the spot and is camping at Kudachi village. The police had gone to arrest the dacoits who had made away with Rs 1.70 crore from a house at Kappalguddi village a few days ago.
