Tokyo, April 13: Eiko Funashi, 70, is aiming to become the oldest woman to climb Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak.
Funashi is planning to climb the 8,848-metre Himalayan mountain in May together with three other Japanese climbers, Kyodo News reported Tuesday.
The woman already attempted the climb in 2006, but failed to reach the summit. Should she succeed, she would break the record of fellow Japanese Tame Watanabe, who conquered the mountain in 2002, aged 63.
Mount Everest, which was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for both experienced climbers and tourists.
