Thanjavur, January 27: Police arrested a 62-year-old man for allegedly murdering his own two year-old granddaughter at Eesanangkudi village near here, police said today.
Police said, the arrested Ramaiyan, had, in an inebrited condition, attacked his granddaugther with a sickle. On hearing her cries, their neighbours rushed to their house. But they found the girl Sandhya in a pool of blood, struggling for life.
She was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital in Thanjavur where she succumbed to her injuries today, police said.
The neighbours caught Ramaiyan and handed him over to the police.
He told the police that he did not mean to kill the girl, but only attempted to chase away evil spirits. He was not in his senses when he attacked his granddaughter.
