50 percent EDMC workers’ March salary not paid: HC told

New Delhi: Sanitation workers of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Monday claimed before the Delhi High Court that about 50 percent of them were yet to receive salaries for March.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath was, however, informed by the Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, who appeared for EDMC, that salaries for March have been paid to all employees.

“As far as the EDMC is concerned, we have paid all the salaries till March 2016,” Anand said.

The Delhi government’s counsel, too, informed the Bench that funds have been released for paying salaries to EDMC employees.

The bench has fixed the matter for hearing on May 10, asking the employee unions to file affidavit if salaries were not paid to them till then.

During the hearing, the bench told the Aam Aadmi Party government and the three municipal corporations that they were responsible for paying salaries to the employees of civic bodies and could say they lacked funds.

The court on April 19 had directed the civic bodies to ensure that the wages for March be paid to all the sanitation workers within a week without fail.

It had directed civic bodies to pay regular salaries to the sanitation workers on or before 7th of every month for smooth functioning of the corporations.
