Srinagar, May 19: Nearly 5 lakh people in the state registered themselves as basic members of the Congress, which is sharing power with National Conference, during the membership drive which ended in February, state party chief Saifuddin Soz said today.
“As many as 2,40,100 people registered themselves as members of the party in Kashmir while 2,45,00 got membership in Jammu. In addition, 11,256 were chosen as delegates – 7000 in Jammu and 4256 in Kashmir”, Soz told reporters here today, adding, over Rs 37 lakh has been collected in the bank as membership fee and delegate fee.
14,000 or 15,000 more are expected from far-off places like Zanskar, Leh, Nobra and other places, he added.
The figure was in contrast to earlier membership drive as only 83,000 were registered in Kashmir and 1.19 lakh in Jammu, Soz said.
