Hyderabad, April 06: 40 more patients were treated at the health camp set up at Chilkalaguda railway quarters where contaminated drinking water has affected around 300 residents in the last three days.
The condition of one patient Mr T. Ratnam, 55, continues to be serious. He is on ventilator support at a corporate hospital in Secunderabad. Other members of his family were also seriously ill though their condition has improved.
District medical and health officer Dr B.L.Veenakumari said the situation was under control. “On Tuesday, 38 people were treated at our health camp,” he said.
“There were no serious cases. Chlorinated HMWSSB tankers are supplying drinking water in the area while we are giving chlorine tablets to each and every household,” he said and added, “It will take another 48-72 hours for the pathological and water test reports to come.” The death of the railway employee Mr Vishwa Raju is not due to water contamination, according to the authorities, as he was suffering from a heart ailment and died before cases of contamination began to manifest, said chief medical superintendent Dr J. Sawin of Railway Hospital, Lallaguda.
Officials of the Institute of Preventive Medicine have collected the water samples and sent them for culture test. “It will take at least 48 hours to determine the nature of the impurities,” said Mr P. Anjaneyelu, water analyst at the IPM. No case has been registered yet by the police for negligence of the civic body responsible for supplying water in the Chilkalaguda railway quarters. No effort was made by the police to take complains from the hospitalised victims. Chilkalaguda inspector of police Mr B. Anjaiah said, “If we receive complaints, we will book a case.” An SI of the Chilkalaguda police station said that legal experts said a suo motu case can be booked.
