17-year-old girl cracks IIT-JEE commits suicide as she didn’t want to be engineer

Jaipur: A 17-year-old girl, Kriti Tripathi, jumped off a five-storey building in Kota after cracking the IIT- JEE as she didn’t want to become an engineering.

Kriti who hailed from Ghaziabad was staying with her parents in Kota for her studies left a five-page note citing the reasons for ending her life.

Kota superintendent of police SS Godara said. “Prima facie, the cause of suicide seems like depression and disinterest in engineering studies. In her suicide note she mentioned that her mother had admitted her in the science stream but she found no interest in subjects like Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.”

Experts say that most of the suicides are due to fear of failure and the burden of expectations from family.

Awadesh Kumar, assistant sub-inspector at the Jawahar Nagar police station said. “Her father was out when she jumped off the building. Her mother is away in Ghaziabad for the past few months”.

Kota, a coaching hub in Rajasthan, gained notoriety after a number of students committed suicide over the years due to alleged academic pressure.

Almost 1,98,228 candidates cleared the examination which was held both online and offline in 132 cities earlier this month.

As many as 20 coaching students committed suicide in Kota last year. Hope Society, an NGO, runs a round-the-clock
helpline that offers counselling and sustained assistance to suicidal students.
