In what could be termed as a stunning performance, Baroda batsman Yusuf Pathan scored 21 runs in 5 balls in the super over, taking his team into quarters in Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Trophy pre-quarte final match played at the Cricket Club of India here. Yusuf hit the ball of Karnataka pacer Abhimanyu Mithun yesterday in the super over resulting match was tied after both teams scored 167 in the allotted 20 overs.
Batting first, Karnataka put on 167 for 6 with Bharat Chipli, scoring 60 off 43 studded with ten fours and a six. Chasing a tough total, Baroda were reduced to 103 for 7 and were staring at defeat when Murtuza Vahora knocked 45 in just 21 balls. Baroda, needing 12 for victory in the last over, managed to get 11 thanks to some poor fielding and bowling as the game was tied.
Abhimanyu Mithun conceded 22 runs in the super over as Yusuf Pathan hit 2 sixes and two boundaries. Karnataka captain Robin Uthappa and Bharat Chipli tried to win the match for Karnataka but could manage just 7 runs. Meanwhile, Punjab thrashed Assam by 9-wicket in the second match of the day.
Assam could score just 116 for 9 after been put into bat by Punjab skipper Harbhajan Singh. Mandeep Singh picked up 3 for 22, while Vikram Singh claimed 2 for 10. In reply, Punjab chased down the target in just 11 overs. Opener Sarul Kanwar stayed unbeaten on 47 while one-drop Gurkeerat Singh smashed 62 off 38 balls.
