Kadapa, December 06: Y S Vijayalakshmi, widow of late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, was today elected unopposed to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from Pulivendula constituency.
The bypoll was held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband in an helicopter crash on September 2.
Her election was a milestone as it was the first time that a person was elected to AP Assembly without a contest from Rayalaseema region of the state.
Ms Vijayalakshmi was a lone Congress candidate to file the nomination for the byelection from Pulivendula assembly constituency slated to go to the poll on December 19. However, with the opposition parties, including Telugu Desam, PRP, CPI, CPI(M) and BJP responding to the appeal of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee did not put up a candidate for the byelection.
The Returning Officer G Gopal declared Ms Vijayalakshmi the Congress candidate elected from Pulivendula constituency on the expiry of the deadline for the withdrawal of nomination this evening.
Mr Y S Bhaskara Reddy, the cousin of late Chief Minister YSR took the certificate from the Returning Officer on behalf of Ms Vijayalakshmi.
