YSR orders top cops to stay on roads

Hyderabad, July 22: Higher officials of the Police Department will now accompany their subordinates in the Traffic Police department to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city during peak hours. Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday directed senior police officials to be on the field everyday during peak hours to decrease congestion on the roads immediately.

In a review meeting with officials of the Police, Transport and Municipal departments, Rajasekhara Reddy asked the officials to prepare a detailed plan to check the traffic problem prevailing in Hyderabad. He also directed officials to prepare plans for road expansion and construction of new flyover bridges to relieve vehicular traffic under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

Further, homeguards will also be trained in traffic management along with the police constables to overcome the shortage of manpower.

A three-member committee comprising officials from GHMC, Police and Transport departments will be formed by the Chief Secretary to study the traffic management systems in metro cities abroad. The committee will submit a detailed report on traffic management to the State government in a couple of months.
