Youth arrested for attempting to kill his grandmother

New Delhi, May 05: A 25-year-old youth was arrested from Chennai for allegedly attempting to kill his grandmother in her house here, police said today. The incident took place in May last year when the accused, identified as Nitin Sharma, had come to his grandmother”s house in Baljeet Nagar.

Sharma had demanded gold bangles from his grandmother, Kaushalya Devi, and on refusal, he put a cloth in her mouth and attempted to strangulate her. “She became unconscious and Sharma fled away after taking her gold bangles,” a senior police officer said.

On receiving an information about Sharma”s presence in Cudol in Chennai, the police raided the hideout and arrested Sharma on Monday. As he could not be traced initially, a court had declared Sharma a proclaimed offender.

“He (Sharma) told police that he was in need of money and when his grandmother refused to give her bangles, he got agitated and tried to kill her. He further disclosed that he had sold the gold bangles to Gupta,” the officer said.

Nitin Gupta (23), a jeweller who received stolen articles from Sharma, has also been arrested by the police. After selling the bangles to Gupta, Sharma left Delhi and kept hiding himself at different places in Jammu, Mumbai and Chennai.

In Chennai, he was working with a cyber cafe. Sharma had stolen articles from the house in earlier occasions also.
