Younis may lead Pakistan in NZ, Oz series

Lahore, October 18: Younis Khan is likely to lead Pakistan in the upcoming back-to-back series against New Zealand and Australia.

”PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt will speak to Younis about the above mentioned assignments and a formal announcement about his nomination as skipper will be made in a couple of days,” sources told the Dawn.

Younis, who tendered his resignation as Pakistan captain on October 14 following match-fixing allegations by a parliamentarian after the national team’s losses against Australia and New Zealand at the Champions Trophy, has however, laid down a few terms and conditions for reversing his decision.

His foremost condition is his appointment for a long tenure – possibly till the 2011 World Cup. But, PCB sources asserted that a further extension of Younis’ tenure will depend to a large extent on his own performances in the two ODI series as well as his relations with team members.

The 31-year-old right hander had stressed on his unhappiness with the current arrangement where the manager, assistant manager and vice-captain need to be consulted while selecting the playing XI, and wants just the coach during consultations for the same.

The sources added that the PCB has already accepted the demand. Younis, who took over the captaincy from Shoaib Malik earlier this year, would also complete almost a year of his tenure by the end of the series against Australia.
