In yet another hate crime, man with ‘Muslim’ name shot at in Begusarai

PATNA: In yet another hate crime, a Muslim man was shot at in Begusarai district of Bihar after allegedly asked him to reveal his name.

According to The Hindu reports, the incident took place on Sunday morning in Kumbhi village of Begusarai, where Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Giriraj Singh has been declared elected.

Mohammed Qasim, who is a detergent salesman, had gone out on his bike to collect money from customers when a local youth identified as Rajiv Yadav asked his name and reportedly open fired at him.

A video footage of an injured Qasim speaking about the incident has gone viral on social media platforms.

“The moment I revealed my name, he started hurling abuses at me and then asked what I was doing here,” Qasim said.

“He said: ‘You should have gone to Pakistan,’” Qasim added.

“Then he fired at me and the bullet hit my back.

“He was loading another bullet into his rifle when I pushed him away and fled the scene,” the victim can be heard saying in the video.

According to the victim, no villager came to his rescue when the accused in the drunken state attacked him. Even the local Sarpanch also didn’t help him , when he approached him for support.

He reached the police station who admitted him to the sadar (town) government and registered a case. The accused has not been arrested yet.

This is the third incident of alleged hate crime reported in the last week. On May 22, three Muslim youths were thrashed by cow vigilantes over suspicion that they were carrying beef.

On Saturday, 25-year-old Mohammad Barker Alam was allegedly accosted and beaten up by four unidentified assailants here on Saturday night for wearing a traditional skullcap and not chanting “Jai Shri Ram”.
