Yechury faults Sibal’s zero loss claim in 2G spectrum row

Bangalore, January 08: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury Saturday said Communications Minister Kapil Sibal appeared to be in a “cover-up” exercise over the 2G spectrum scandal.

Yechury termed as “bizzare” Sibal’s argument that there was zero-loss in 2G spectrum allocation, the row over which resulted in the resignation of A. Raja as communications minister.

Sibal’s argument appeared to be a “cover-up exercise to shield the beneficiaries”, Yechury told a seminar on ‘Corruption is a Challenge to Indian Democracy’. The seminar was organised by Bangalore chapter of All India Lawyers’ Union.

Sibal, who took over from Raja, had argued in New Delhi Friday that the methodology used by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India to arrive at the estimated loss to government from the allocation was “erroneous”.

Yechury also said his party was firm on the demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the scandal.
