The sole purpose of writing is to pen down your thoughts – personal as well as about the things that matter. Things that are important. Things that bring change. It doesn’t matter what you’re writing about unless you write the truth because the truth hits the hardest. It changes people. Changes governments and changes the world. It enables you to connect with people.
Let me start with the most basic and essential thing that a writer should remember forever, that is to always consider himself as a learner. To accept change and to accept criticism. Start without any expectations of where you’ll end up.
Now, content writing is not just writing an article or a paragraph about a particular subject or your favourite sport. It is about describing your emotions and putting your views forward through your writing. Some sing to express while some act and then some write. So choose a subject that you can do total justice to. For example, if you’re not into sports and sit down to write about golf, you’ll get stuck. And even if you read every single article about it available on the Internet, you’ll never be satisfied with whatever little you manage to come up with. Next, don’t compare your writings with someone as not everyone writes in the same way. Your thought process is completely different from someone else’s. You can never be a Jeffrey Archer and he can never be you. You are unique. Another important thing in content writing is to target a particular audience. An audience who’ll understand what you’re writing about. Let your work speak for you. And in today’s time, if you’re looking for a wider audience then you need to be able to connect with them. You can start off by writing for newspapers as a freelancer and social networking is a great way too. Equally important is to keep learning and correcting your mistakes. Expand your knowledge. Always look out for newer challenges. If you find something really interesting, just write. Write about your day to day activities. Maintain a journal. Write about people. Go to the elders in your family and ask them about the life they’ve lived. The experiences will help you a lot. Write about your favourite season or your favourite place. Show it to people who are close to you and ask them if any changes are required. We all need a little bit of help, so don’t hesitate to ask for it. They might just find the smallest mistake that you could’ve missed. It’s okay if you don’t find the appreciation right away. It will take time before people start understanding you. But once they do, you’ll become a part of them. Your words can alter the way people think and feel. They can alter people’s mood and can bring about a shift of perspective. Your words will cross boundaries and people from different places will read them. Not everyone will abide with what you have to say but that is a good thing. People with different opinions and mindset will always inspire you in someway. Another thing to remember is to not mix fiction with nonfiction. Don’t mix facts with myths. And never write about things that you aren’t sure of. Always write with a purpose. A purpose of connecting with people and making an impact no matter how small it might be. Inspire someone. Make them believe that even when there are so many problems in this world, things will eventually fall into place. Words matter as they possess immense power. Words move faster than you think they do. Hence, use them wisely. Also, writing to please people doesn’t help you in making yourself noteworthy. Only when you make people uncomfortable will they realise what you’re capable of. A writer’s content is the window to his/her mind. What you write about is what people think you believe in. So write what is significant by being true to yourself. It is a rare talent that can be used for both good and bad. Anyone can use it for bad but it takes a special person to use it for good. Be that special person and don’t write to change people’s perception; let them realise it on their own.
Remember, whatever you write is being read by someone, so be responsible. Being responsible doesn’t necessarily mean to sugarcoat stuff. It means to use the words which can make an impact while keeping in mind not to hurt anybody’s sentiments. Also, people should be using their mind and heart, not a dictionary, while reading your composition. So keep it simple yet meaningful and influential.
Lastly, write. Why? Because you can!
