Mumbai, July 12: ADHYAYAN SUMAN tells Jyothi Venkatesh in a no holds barred interview his take on Jashn and his break-up with Kangana.
Adhyayan Suman is awaiting the release of his third film Jashn after having come up with a hit in the form of his second film Raaz, asserts that though it does help him that he is Shekhar Suman’s son since it automatically gets him attention, he is emphatic that if there was no talent in him, no one would have bothered to come forward to launch him as an actor or continue to cast him in their films.
According to Adhyayan, Jashn is based on an aspiring rock star who wishes to make it big in the field of music. “I play the role of Akash Verma, who goes out in the big bad world outside on his own steam and struggles to make a name for him. It is a coming of age film and is all about the journey of Akash, who has the moral support of his sister who is the mistress of a big businessman. It is all about the relationship of Akash with his sister played by Sahana Goswami, as well as his girl friend, played by Anjana Sukhani”.
Adhyayan says that honestly he could not believe that he was capable of rendering a performance as the one he has in Jashn when he saw the film recently and is thankful to Mahesh Bhatt who, according to him, is all set to stage his comeback as a director after twenty years with Jashn. “The role challenged me as an actor because it is about a struggler who sees down fall as well as rises in life because of his sister and girl friend.”
Adhyayan continues. “I surrendered myself to Bhatt saab. I did not have to prepare myself for the role because frankly when you have a director like Bhatt saab, you have to just listen to what he says and emote. The best thing about the film is that every scene you see in the film is what Bhatt saab had experienced in his life and hence to be able to deliver the way he wanted was a huge responsibility.”
In terms of its emotional content, Adhyayan is of the opinion that Jashn is very real. “People will relate to me and feel bad like they felt about the kid when they saw Taare Zameen Par. I just felt the emotions and delivered the lines. Bhatt saab taught me how to live a character on the screen. On the sets, I was never out of the mould of Akash Verma. I think as an actor, I always feel that I am not acting in front of the camera.”
Adhyayan wishes that Jashn was his debut film as an actor. “Honestly, I count my journey in the film industry only from Raaz and I am glad that I am following Raaz up with a film like Jashn, which revolves out and out around me. Raaz belonged to an entirely different genre and was a completely different film where there was no scope for performance for me. As far as Jashn is concerned, I could not have asked for more as an actor.”
Adhyayan confesses that his dad cried after he watched Jashn and told him that he had cried like that the day Adhyayan was born, because at the end of the day, it is also his dad’s story. “There are advantages as well as disadvantages in being the son of a star like Shekhar Suman, because though I feel it is a big deal to be told that I am Shekhar Suman’s son, it is bad that on the flip side people expect me to be as good as Shekhar Suman, which is not possible because Haal E Dil was my first film”, quips Adhyayan who is now all set to act with his father Shekhar Suman in the film version of the popular soap Dekh Bhai Dekh to be directed by Anand Mahendroo.
Adhyayan admits that though it was a tough decision he had no other alternative but to call his relationship with Kangana off because he wanted to concentrate on his career. “It would have been stupid on my part to let my career suffer at the cost of love. Even Kangana has a career ahead of her. In today’s time, it is very important to be successful, career-wise.”
