Workshop on disability at JNU

New Delhi: A national workshop on disability focussing on its philosophical aspects was organised at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here today.

At the event, Professor T K Oommen sought to provide an analysis of ability and disability and underlined the necessity of approaching the issue of disability from rights- based perspective, said a release.

A thematic souvenir was also released at the event, which was an initiative of Disability Studies Programme, along with Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies (SDRS).

“It was necessary for the society to galvanise the potentials of persons with disabilities for betterment,” Professor Ajay Patnaik said.

Professor R P Singh emphasised about the dichotomy between disability and ability which could be philosophised in a substantive manner.

The convener of the workshop, G N Karna, talked about abysmal lack of awareness even among the intelligentsia, policy makers, rehabilitation professionals and disability rights activists with regard to the conceptual framework of ability and disability.

“It is important to provide a comprehensive philosophical analysis of the conceptual framework of disability by drawing on the literature concerning the notions of disease, illness and disability,” Karna said.
