Worker threatens to jump off tower

Hyderabad, April 09: A municipal worker gave a scare to police and onlookers for more than three hours after he climbed a floodlight tower and threatened to jump from there, demanding release of his arrears.

The worker, B Narasimha Rao was working as a pump operator in the LB Nagar municipal division. According to police, Narasimha was suspended from work three years back and later reinstated.

Narasimha was supposed to get arrears of his salary during the suspension period. But his repeated appeals to officials reportedly went in vain.

Today around 8.30 a.m, Narasimha climbed the floodlight tower of the LB stadium and attracted passers-by attention by screaming at the top of his voice. He climbed nearly 30 feet and threatened to jump, if his demands were not met.

Saifabad police soon rushed to the spot and started to persuade Narasimha to climb down. They held negotiations through a mobile phone available with him. Narasimha, however, refused to come down until his demand was met. Police called Narasimha’s family members who also urged him to come down but he did not heed them. He insisted that higher officials of the LB Nagar division come and resolve the issue. Though police contacted municipal officials and asked them to come to the spot, they did not come for nearly one-and-half hour as they reportedly got stuck in traffic.

After they reached the spot, officials assured to solve his problems after which Narasimha came down.

Police said this was the second time that Narasimha had made an attempt to end his life over non-payment of his arrears.

Earlier, he consumed poison in front of the LB Nagar division office but survived.

Police registered a case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide).
