Won’t ‘interfere’ in Lankan training issue: Apex court

The Supreme Court Monday refused to interfere with government decisions to impart training to Sri Lankan army and air force personnel at various centres in the country.

An apex court bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai dismissed a PIL filed by an advocate, N. Rajaraman, observing that the court cannot go into policy decisions of the government having foreign policy implications.

The petitioner advocate submitted that the government cannot impart training to Sri Lankan defence personnel citing the letters written by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and other political leaders in Tamil Nadu.

The Sri Lankan soldiers who were being imparted training in Chennai were shifted to Bangalore after Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to the central government protesting against the training of the Sri Lankan defence personnel.
