Pune, April 13: President Pratibha Patil today said self-help groups should be supported to make women economically independent.
“Finance should be made available for (self-help groups of) women for starting their own businesses so that they can become economically independent. Dalit women should also go ahead on the path of social progress without any sense of inferiority,” she said addressing a function here.
Patil said education was the first means of empowerment of women and laid emphasis on free and compulsory education for all girls and boys in the 6-14 age group.
A film, “Ranraginincha Desh” (A country of women warriors), depicting heroic feats of the female freedom fighters, was screened on the occasion.
