Hyderabad: A group of women activists has submitted a memorandum to the Telangana State Minority Commission (TSMC) on Tuesday demanding its intervention in preventing the implementation of CAA, NRC and NPR.
Prof Rama Malkote, a noted social activist, told siasat.com that several groupings of women have come together to put pressure on the government on accepting their demands. “We also plan to meet the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and all the members of parliament and members of legislative assembly and council in Telangana and submit out demands to them,” she said.
“We are absolutely unhappy with the State police because of the way it is handling the demonstrators and the requests for permission for holding meetings. This is repressive, undemocratic,” she said.
CAA should be recalled
Kaneez Fatima who is part of one of the groups that signed the petition said that the CAA should be recalled immediately. The government is camouflaging its intentions in all sorts of reassurances. “We do not believe them. We want action,” she asserted.
According to published reports the NPR exercise will be embarked upon in conjunction with the Census 2021 House-listing process. Ever since the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 was passed in the Parliament, the country has witnessed wide-spread protests.
The groups that are involved in the protest noted that the TSMC has a mandate of suggesting appropriate legal measures in matters related to minorities. However, a member of the delegation said, the Chairman did not give any specific assurance to them.
NPR process is anti-poor
In the representation, the women activists termed the CAA as unconstitutional and implied that the NPR process is anti-poor and would lead to the disenfranchisement of the numerous Indians.
They demanded that the TSMC release a statement against the CAA, NRC and the NPR. Since the body has powers to make recommendations to the state government, it should also demand government call for a session of the Assembly to pass a resolution against the NRC, NPR and CAA.
The other members who were part of the delegation included Parveen and Meera Sangamitra.
