Woman who robbed mom- in- law nabbed

New Delhi, May 31: The Delhi Police have arrested a woman who had drugged her mother- in- law and made away with cash and jewellery worth over Rs 50 lakh earlier this month.

Meetu Talwar, 28, who had served mango shake laced with sedatives to her mother- in- law in the Tilak Nagar area of west Delhi, was arrested along with five of her relatives.

Those arrested are her mother Parvinder Kaur ( 45), brother Kamal Nan Singh ( 24), maternal aunt Jagminder Kaur ( 42), maternal uncle Sukhbir Singh ( 55) and another relative Maher Singh.

Meetu’s family was nabbed after being on the run for nearly a fortnight.

Sharad Aggarwal, deputy commissioner of police ( west), said the family was arrested from Hari Nagar area of west Delhi.

On May 16, Meetu’s mother- in- law Har Kaur reported to the police that her daughter- in- law had gone missing along with all the cash and jewellery in her almirah.

She had been married to Har’s son Narender Singh, who died after an illness — leaving behind their sixyear- old daughter. After his death Meetu married Narender’s younger brother Nir Mohan, who is settled in the UK. “ Meetu broke down after her arrest and confessed why she stole the valuables,” Aggarwal said.

She told inspector Raman Lamba’s team, which has since recovered half the stolen items, that while Nir Mohan sent her money, it wasn’t enough. “ She claimed to have taken a huge loan for Narender’s treatment from her maternal aunt, who was pressuring her to repay it,” a source said.

Her mother and brother planned the heist while Sukhbir was entrusted with ‘ investing’ the loot. He had already mortgaged some jewellery.

Some locals have alleged that her brother Kamal had fleeced them after taking money in return for procuring visas to foreign countries.

It is also alleged that he defrauded a travel agency where he worked as a ticketing agent. The police are probing his past record.
