Hyderabad, May 12: A 26-year-old woman has been admitted to the Osmania General Hospital after allegedly escaping from being burnt to death at the hands of her in-laws for additional dowry.
Shareefa Noor, a resident of Kandigal Gate claimed that her husband Syed Mukarramuddin along with his mother Khadeerunnisa and brother Ibrahimuddin splashed doused her with kerosene after thrashing her. They then locked her in a room.
She further said that her in-laws were demanding that she get Rs 5,000 from her parents or else they would burn her alive. Shareefa had been married to Mukarramuddin eight years ago and is a mother of two children.
She claims that she managed to escape from the room and file a complaint against her in-laws with the Chatrinaka police. The police then sent her to the Osmania General Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The victim further alleged that she had a week earlier approached the police who had counseled her in-laws, but did not register a complaint. “Had the police registered the complaint, my in-laws would not have dared to thrash me,” Shareefa told INN. She added, “I have got blisters on my body due to being doused with kerosene.”
Meanwhile, the police said that there was no dowry harassment angle to the case, and it was a domestic tiff. “We counseled the couple and sent them back, since the matter was a domestic issue,” the police said.
However, Shareefa maintained that Sub-Inspector K Srinivasulu of the Chatrinaka police station had refused to listen to her complaint and insisted that the case was a domestic issue.
