Woman shot at in UP for marrying outside community

A 25-year-old woman was shot at allegedly by her brothers and an accomplice for marrying outside her community at Sivaya village here, police said.

The incident took place yesterday when the two brothers, identified as Nijamuddin and Furkan, along with their friend Shahid, went to meet their sister Furkani at her house.

They demanded water from her and when she came near them, they shot at her, Daurala police field officer Brijesh Kumar said.

Furkani was admitted to a hospital and her condition is stated to be serious, Kumar said.

Furkani had married Ravindra, who belonged to another community, four years back, despite opposition from her family, Kumar said.

The couple was residing in Deoband and came back to Sivaya village two months ago as they thought the situation in Furkani’s home would be normal after four years of marriage, he said.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered against the two brothers and Shahid on Ravindra’s complaint, the officer said.

One accused has been arrested while efforts are on to nab the other two who are absconding, police said.

In apprehension of tension in the village, extra police force has been deployed, Kumar said.
