Vishakapatnam, February 14: After she failed to get family pension from Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) and was unable to eke out a living, a 65-year-old woman sought permission from the district collector to end her life.
G Devudamma of Mallunaidu Palem of Sabbavaram mandal in the district lost her husband Atchiyya, who worked in the ore handling complex of VPT, in 1997 while he was in service. Devudamma requested the VPT authorities for employment and family pension. But when VPT denied her both, she worked as a daily labourer.
Devudamma also requested the Collector to intervene in the matter but failed to get any response. In 2007, the VPT officials told her that there was no service record of her husband to consider her case.
Devudamma now has grown old and having health problems, she is unable to go for work.
Ill health, financial problems and mental stress finally forced her to decide to end her life and she sought the Collector’s permission. She has also given representation in this regard to the Commissioner of Police and the District Sessions Judge.
