Woman kills self as hubby refuse to buy new sari

Bhuwaneswar, June 01: A 27-year-old woman, Mamina Behera, has allegedly committed suicide after her husband, a carpenter, refused to buy her a saree for the Sabitri festival.

Police inquiry on Tuesday revealed that Mamina had a tiff with her husband, Susanta Behera, on Monday over buying the saree. After he went out for work that day, she allegedly committed suicide. She has a two-year old daughter, whom the neighbours found crying inside their rented house at Khandagiri. Police have registered an unnatural death case.

“She had been insisting on buying the saree on Monday itself, while I told her that we will buy it on Tuesday. I went to work, but she took it to heart and did not even think about the child,” said her husband Behera.

It is customary for married Oriya women to wear a new saree and use new cosmetics for make-up and survive on fruits for the day that they dedicate solely to praying to God for the long life of their husbands.

In another incident, Babita Das, a 20-year-old woman of Khandagiri area, committed suicide by hanging herself over some family dispute on Tuesday.

Sources said, there had been some misunderstandings among the family members over which they also would have frequent quarrels. As a result, she took the drastic step. Her husband, Kulamani Das, was also a carpenter. Police have registered an unnatural death case.
