A 21- year old woman committed suicide in North 24 Parganas district of Kolkata fearing public humiliation, the police said.
The deceased was identified as Tanima Das who hanged herself from the ceiling in her room on Sunday after her classmate and ex- boyfriend threatened to post their intimate photos and videos on social networking sites.
The accused, Jay Sarkar, was arrested by the district police and produced in a district court on Monday.
According to officer- in- charge of Duttapukur police station Sanjay Kumar Chakraborty,“Preliminary investigation suggests that Tanima badmouthed Jayduring a minor argument a few days ago. On Saturday, Jay went to her house with some friends and threatened her.” “Hearing that, Tanima’s parents hit her in front of Jay and his friends. The next day the girl committed suicide,” the police official said.
Mr. Chakraborty said the accused has admitted his role in crime. During the interrogation he confessed that he never had any such obscene photos or video of the girl and had said so in the spur of the moment.
The police have also take a look at the cell phone of the accused to find out if any such thing was ever captured but nothing objectionable was found.
“But the family of the victim lodged a complaint saying the duo was in a relationship and broke up recently after which the boy threatened her. The family also claimed that Jay used to extort money from Tanima, threatening to circulate her pictures online,” Chakraborty said.
