Woman injured in an argument over selfie in Sharjah

Sharjah: A Gulf Cooperation National in Sharjah was injured by three other women, breaking her thumb and afflicting minor cuts on her body, when she demanded them to delete the selfie.

According, to the Sharjah police, the woman was in a Beauty Salon. Three other women customers visited the salon to get their make up done for their friend’s wedding and clicked a selfie once it was done, unaware of the fact that this woman was standing behind them.

In a heated argument with the three other woman over deleting the selfie, they injured her.

The salon owner could do nothing in the dispute and ended up calling the police.

In United Arab Emirates, clicking a photographs without permission is a punishable offence.

The law says, “That who commits an act which breaches the privacy of other people’s lives by listening to a conversation, recording or sharing a clip, or taking a picture of a person without their consent, faces jail or a fine.”

The Federal Law No 5 for 2012 regarding social media states ‘that a person found guilty, can be jailed for a period for more than six months, and could also be fined between Dh 150,000 and Dh 500,000 (Rs 26 lakh to Rs 87 lakh), as reported in Dailyhunt.
